Review: On-Device vs Cloud AI — What Actually Changes for You

Local models are private and work offline; cloud models are stronger but send your data away. Here is how to choose per task, not per personality.

The Changes in This Part

  1. 08

    Privacy

Every convenience trades a little data. Learn what you're handing over, and default to collecting and sharing less.

  2. 17

    City & Home

Sensors, delivery drones and smart infrastructure change daily life. Ask who owns and can access the data your home and street collect.

The Review

The trade in one line

On-device AI keeps your data with you and keeps working offline, but is smaller and less capable. Cloud AI is more powerful, but every prompt is a small disclosure. Neither wins everywhere.

Match the tool to the sensitivity

Drafting a public document and summarising your medical records are not the same job. Send the public work to the strongest model you can; keep the sensitive work local, or do not send it at all.

Test both where it matters

Try one privacy-sensitive task on an on-device assistant and compare it with your cloud tool. The gap is narrower every year, and knowing it yourself beats trusting a recommendation.

Ask Yourself Three Questions

From the author's note — run these after every chapter you read.

  1. 1 What might change in my life?
  2. 2 What do I need to learn or protect?
  3. 3 What is one action I can take this week?
