Family, Society & the Future Economy
The changes you cannot make alone: your street, your rights, inequality, and the shape of work in a portfolio world.
The changes you cannot make alone: your street, your rights, the gap between haves and have-nots, and the shape of work itself.
The Changes in This Part
- 17
City & Home
Sensors, delivery drones and smart infrastructure change daily life. Ask who owns and can access the data your home and street collect.
- 18
Law & Responsibility
When an automated decision harms someone, ask who is accountable. Regulation is catching up — keep your own paper trail.
- 19
Inequality
Access to AI is uneven and widens gaps unless it is deliberately spread. Support public access and shared skills in your own community.
- 20
Future Economy
Expect new job categories, shorter skill half-lives and more portfolio careers. Build buffers instead of betting everything on one title.
The Playbook
The changes you cannot make alone
Some shifts happen at the scale of a street, a city or a country: how homes and public spaces collect data, who is accountable when an automated decision harms someone, and whether the benefits of AI are shared or concentrated. These are not personal-productivity problems, and individual effort alone will not solve them. Knowing which layer you are dealing with stops you blaming yourself for a systemic issue.
Build buffers, not bets
Expect new job categories, shorter skill half-lives and more portfolio careers. A buffer can be savings, a second income stream, a network of people who know your work, or a portable skill. Betting everything on one employer or one title leaves you exposed to changes you did not cause.
Three questions for your city and employer
Ask who owns the data collected in your home, school or workplace; who is accountable when an automated system makes a wrong decision; and how the gains are shared with the people affected. Clear answers are a good sign. Silence is information too.
Ask Yourself Three Questions
From the author's note — run these after every chapter you read.
- 1 What might change in my life?
- 2 What do I need to learn or protect?
- 3 What is one action I can take this week?
